Japanese Papers for Printing

Metric Measurements and Inch Equivalents

To ensure accurate, economical printing when publications are designed or typeset elsewhere for printing in Japan, it is necessary to know the standard paper and trim sizes used in Japan. The JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) for printing papers encompasses a large variety of both metric and metricated traditional paper sizes, few of which are found in other countries. Because this information is rarely available to designers and publishers outside Japan, EDS Inc., Editorial & Design Services, has published this guide.

Note that in the interest of legibility, Japanese terms are not italicized here. Also note that in transliterating Japanese, standard Japanese keyboarding is used to represent sustained vowels (those normally accented with macrons when romanized), e.g., "ou" usually represents a sustained "o," but it can also represent two discrete syllables. If precise pronunciation distinctions are important, please consult a Japanese-English dictionary or a native speaker of Japanese.

Grammage
In countries using the metric system, the weight in grams of one sheet of paper that is one square meter in area--not dependent on basic sheet size or paper grade.

measurements are exact; Inch measurements are approximate
(calculated at 25.4 mm = 1 inch and rounded off). N.B. Although
JIS A series sizes A0 through A10 are identical to ISO/DIN A series
sizes, JIS B series sizes are not identical to ISO/DIN B series
sizes. See the end of this table for additional information.

sizes can be cut from JIS B stock (with waste of about 5.7%), JIS B sizes cannot
be cut economically from ISO/DIN B stock.
