||  cybertutorial 5 ||  the mo particle

The Addition-Indicating Particle

"mo" is used in place of the topic-indicating particle "wa" to
indicate that what comes before it is in addition to other
things or people.

Example:

Boku wa asita ikimasu.
I tomorrow go
I (will) go tomorrow.

Boku mo asita ikimasu
I tomorrow go
I (also) (will) go tomorrow.

After interrogative words, the function of mo is to add a
sense of "all" to what comes before it:

dare
who
dare
mo
everyone
(before a negative: noone)
__________________________

nani
what
nani
mo
everything
(before a negative: nothing)
__________________________

doko
where
doko
mo
everywhere
(before a negative: nowhere)
__________________________

itu
when
itu
mo
always
(before a negative: never)

mo is also used to indicate that a noun preceding it is in
addition to something or someone:

Examples:

susi mo suki desu.
sushi like
(I) like sushi (also).

susi mo sake mo suki desu.
sushi sake (rice wine) like
(I) like (both) sushi (and) sake [and other things].

Kare wa Nihongo mo dekimasu.
he Japanese can
He can (speak) Japanese (also).

Kare wa Nihongo mo Furansugo mo dekimasu.
he Japanese French can
He can (speak) (both) Japanese (and) French [and at least one other language].

Note:
The ...
mo...mo construction indicates that in addition to the two
things mentioned, at least one other thing is implied.
